A 26-litre pack that expands to 32 when the trip does. The Subterra 2 travel backpack is sized to work as a personal item on the flight and as a day pack once you land, which covers most of what a short trip actually asks of a bag.

The removable packing cube compresses clothes into a defined block so the rest of the pack stays orderly, and it lifts out entirely on the days you are carrying nothing but a laptop. A 16-inch laptop and a tablet each get a padded sleeve, the main compartment opens from the front or from the back panel depending on what you buried, and the pass-through strap sits it on a suitcase handle through the terminal.
